Spanish Super Cup: Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid on penalties

Sergio Ramos scored the decisive spot-kick as Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 on penalties to win the Spanish Super Cup.

The Real captain sent Jan Oblak the wrong way to secure the trophy after a goalless 120 minutes in Saudi Arabia.

Saul Niguez and Thomas Partey missed their penalties for Atletico.

Real Madrid had ended the game with 10 men after Federico Valverde was sent off in extra time for fouling Alvaro Morata when he was clean through.

The dramatic finale was at odds with what was a largely turgid encounter at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah.

Joao Felix had the best opportunity of a quiet first half, but he could only shoot wide from the edge of the box after he had been gifted possession by Ramos.

Real were much brighter at the start of the second period, with Serbia striker Luka Jovic driving just wide after he had wriggled past two Atletico defenders on the edge of the area.

Atletico did not manage a shot on target until the 79th minute, Kieran Trippier’s searching pass finding Morata, whose volley from the edge of the six-yard box was parried away by Thibaut Courtois.

The game’s major flashpoint came with five minutes remaining in extra time when Valverde cynically hacked down Morata just outside the area when he was clean through on goal, sparking a melee involving both sets of players

In the shootout, Saul saw his spot-kick hit the post before Thomas’ effort was saved by Courtois, giving Ramos the chance to secure Real’s 11th Spanish Super Cup triumph.

The tournament had a new format this season, with the top two from La Liga and the Copa del Rey finalists playing in a four-team competition rather than the two winners playing each other.

Real, despite finishing third in La Liga, qualified because Barcelona won the league and finished runners-up in the Cup.

Club legend Xavi is closing on in signing up as Barcelona Head Coach

FC Barcelona director of football Eric Abidal and chief executive Oscar Grau are meeting with Xavi Hernandez in Doha to explore the possibility of the club legend becoming the first team’s new head coach, it has been claimed.
Al-Sadd have released a statement saying speculation linking Xavi Hernandez with a move back to Barcelona to become the club’s manager are “normal.”
The current Blaugrana head coach Ernesto Valverde has been under pressure throughout the previous two campaigns and scrutiny over his position intensified on Thursday, when Barcelona lost 3-2 to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup.
Xavi, who is a legendary figure at the Camp Nou, has been mentioned as a possible replacement if the Catalan giants were to make a change. Al-Sadd, where the 39-year-old is currently the manager, released the following statement in response to the reports through their general manager Turki Al-Ali,

“The possibility that Xavi goes to Barcelona at any moment is normal, and we hope that he returns in the future because it was his club and his first home. But as of today, Xavi is the coach of Al-Sadd club.
“Xavi is focused on (Saturday’s) game and any negotiation over his departure will be through the official channels.”

Brazil’s Supreme Court rules in support of the Neflix movie depicting Jesus as a gay manager

A Brazil Supreme Court has overturned the order by a judge asking Netflix to remove the controversial movie where Jesus was depicted as gay.

Judge Antonio Diaz Toffoli, head of the Supreme Federal Court on Thursday, January 9, rejected a decision to stop Netflix from showing the controversial movie, “The First Temptation of Christ”, depicting Jesus Christ in a gay relationship.

Rio de Janeiro judge Benedicto Abicair on Wednesday, January 8, ordered Netflix to remove the movie from its platform (read here).

But Netflix appealed the decision and Judge Antonio Diaz Toffoli supported Netflix’s appeal against banning the movie, AFP reports.

It denied the idea that the movie was insulting to Christians.

The judge said: “One cannot suppose that a humorous satire has the ability to weaken the values of the Christian faith, whose existence is traced back more than two thousand years, and which is the belief of the majority of Brazilian citizens.”

Netflix came out in support of the show on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Netflix said: “We strongly support artistic expression and we will fight to defend this important principle, which is the heart of great stories.”

Porta dos Fundos, the Rio-based film company that produced the controversial movie, also released a statement, saying that it “opposed any act of censorship, violence, illegality, authoritarianism” and vowed to continue broadcasting its work.

I’ll just simply say I’m disappointed’: Meghan’s estranged father Thomas Markle reacts to news his daughter and Prince Harry are quitting the royal family

Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan Markle has said he’s ‘disappointed’ after his daughter and Prince Harry revealed that they were stepping back as senior members of Britain’s royal family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the shocking announcement on Wednesday and said they intend to become financially independent’ and to ‘balance’ their time between the U.K. and North America.
Shortly after they announced the news, Meghan’s estranged father spoke out, telling Us Weekly: ‘I’ll just simply say I’m disappointed.’ But the 74-year-old retiring lighting director did not state further on the cause of his disappointment.
Thomas Markle and her daughter have been estranged for so many years. He has not had contact with her even before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.
In an interview with the Daily Mail newspaper last year, Markle pleaded for reconciliation.
‘I would like them to send me a picture of Archie so I can frame it and put it on my wall beside the one of Meghan. Isn’t that what any grandfather would want? I’d love to know if he’s got the famous Markle nose,’ Markle said.
‘Sometimes I get the feeling people think I don’t love my daughter. I do love her very much. I would love nothing more than to put a picture of Archie in a frame and place it beside the one of Meghan.
‘There was never any problem between Meghan and me until recently. I’ve stayed quiet because Meghan was pregnant with Archie but I’m speaking out now because they and their PR people are continuing to ghost me out of her life.
‘Of course, I’m disappointed not to see Archie. I had hoped becoming a mother would mellow Meghan and she would reach out.’

What Pope Francis has to say about US-Iran war

NaijaEnt.comJan 9, 2020 6:44 PM

Pope Francis has urged the United States of America and Iran to avoid escalation and pursue “dialogue and self-restraint.”

The Catholic church leader pleaded with both countries to avert wider conflict in the Middle East.

According to Al-Jazeera, the pontiff commented on the current crisis, in a yearly speech that has come to be known as his “State of the World” address to ambassadors accredited to the Vatican.

He said; “Particularly troubling are the signals coming from the entire region following the heightening of tensions between Iran and the United States,” Francis told diplomats from more than 180 states.

He said the tensions risked “compromising the gradual process of rebuilding in Iraq, as well as setting the groundwork for a vaster conflict that all of us would want to avert”.

Iran had on Wednesday launched over 15 missiles on US targets in Iraq in retaliation to the death of Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian general who was buried on Tuesday. It further issued another warning that any US retaliation to the missile attacks in Baghdad would lead to an all-out war in the Middle East.
